Discussion Question: Week 5!




Read the following quote. Discuss the possible meanings of this quote within the context of the novel. How does the title of the novel "fit" within Holden's philosophy and Salinger's portrayal of the human condition? Are there any other instances in the novel where Holden voices similar concerns?



"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be." Ch. 22

So far, how does
The Catcher in the Rye compare with other coming-of-age novels? Is it more realistic? More relevant to today's teenager? Why? Use examples from your past reading (including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Go Ask Alice, The Outsiders, etc.). What is similar about all books in the coming-of-age genre?

Greetings, fellow readers!

This is our Catcher in the Rye Reader Response forum! For the next 6 weeks, we'll be responding to our class novel in digital format. Instead of wasting valuable paper (and valuable time), we can use the magic of the internet to communicate!

Before we get started, there are a few rules:

1. Absolutely no profanity. This includes all common swear words, innuendo, racial slurs, or links to profane websites. If you wouldn't say it in my class, do not say it in this forum.

2. Only use constructive criticism. No name-calling, insults, or otherwise hurtful comments.

3. NO TEXT LANGUAGE. I h8 txt. OMG, pls. Ur smarter than that.

4. You must use your own name as your user name. If elfgrl92 or hellokitty214 posts a blog, I will delete the post, thus canceling any credit.

5. Please stay on topic. I don't want to hear about what your prom dress looks like, whether you passed your driver's test, or why I should try out Bonne Bell's new Pink 'n' Sparkly Glitter Lip Gloss.


Each week, I will post guided questions to which you will respond. EVERY student must post ONE independent post and TWO responses EACH week. The schedule will be as follows:

Week 1: Read Chapters - 1-4

Week 4: Read Chapters - 16-20
