DISCUSS: Trace Holden's reactions to Allie's death. How does Holden define what it means to be a hero? How does he connect Allie to that definition? Connect what you are observing to a discussion of the catcher's mitt episode.
I believe that Holden defines a hero as someone who writes. He may also define a hero as someone who is smart and kind. The way that he connects his brother with that definition is that his brother was intelligent and wrote poems. Even though his brother was younger than him it seemed to me as if he looked up to his brother. In my perspective Allie was a strong individual and brave, too. He seemed to also find the brighter things in life.
Holden defines what it means to be hero by showing that he cares about certain things. He shows that he doesn't care about school work or anything that has to do with school. Holden connects Allie to this because like Lequietta had said that he wrote poems and cared about other people and their feelings. When Allie was alive, he was brave and wasn't afraid to do or overcome and obstacle.
For a topic to write about for Stradlater, Holden decides to write about his brother, Allie. All Holden has to remember Allie are the young memories and the baseball mitt. Holden describes a hero by someone who is loved by many other and is know for a specific thing he did.
Allie is know for his intelligence even though he is two years younger than Holden. Allie matches Holden's description of a hero. Allie's death left Holden to believe that he could be just like Allie, but Holden does not want to. Holden has Allie's mitt. Allie is left handed and the mitt gives Holden a little bit of remembrance of his brother. Holden looks up to his younger brother rather than looking up for himself. Holden has the chance to be as smart and incredible like Allie, but due to Holden's poor activities and poor choices in life, he does not choose to be like Allie.
I believe Alvin posses a great point when he describes how Holden goes the Allie's mitt to describe a topic for Stradlater. Out of all things Holden posseses, he finds that he can describe Allie's mitt the most. For Holden to only have Allie's mitt to remember Allie by shows that Holden was really effected by Allie's passing. I believe Holden would define a hero by someone who isn't afraid to show how they feel about something. Holden probably saw Allie not scared to tell others what he feels about them or what they do. For example, Holden explains how Allie wasn't afraid to write poems on his baseball glove just in case he got bored in the outfield. Allie didn't care about what his teammates would think of him for writing on his glove.
Holden felt really bad that Allie had passed because that was his brother and with him going on in life kowing his brother is gone is going to be hard. I agree with Joshua when he siad that Holden can be defined as a hero because he is not afraid to show his feelings. He can be defined as a hero also for telling people good things about Allie and bringing his name to good for the world.
Holden defines a hero with the characteristics that Allie h is brother has. Allie was a brave kid, kind, and worthy of knowledge. Allie's death was a greeat affect in Holdens life. Holden was left with Allie's baseball mitt to remember him. The baseball mitt meant alot to Holden because that mitt belonged to Allie. Also it would remind him of all the great memories they experience together. I also agree with Joshua and Jose when they said that Holden could also be define as a hero because he is not afraid to speak his mind. Also how he is not afraid to express his feelings most of the time.
