The setting is very essential to the novel. The reason for this is, because in the novel Holden is constantly referring events and people to New York. In the novel, Holden says that New York is a place where there is always a club open. The Catcher in the Rye could probably take place in another time or place, but it would have to be very simliar to New York and in an era similiar to the 50s. If not, many events and actions would be lost. Say the Catcher in the Rye was placed in today's era. Instead drinking scotch at Ernie's club, he would've had to show I.D. and therefore wouldn't have gotten in. This wouldn't have let him meet up with D.B.'s old friend. So, I personally think that it would have to take place around the 50s and in New York.
I think the setting in The Catcher in the Rye is very essential to the novel and that it probably could not take place in a different time period or location. This is because the reader can see that the city is somewhat like Holden. During this time period, New York is going through changes just like Holden is. He is also learning new things and going through different experiences in a similar way the city is. I think that if the time period or location was to be changed, Holden may have acted a little bit differently. Such as his way of just going into a bar regardless of his age. This shows that this setting is very essential to the novel.
The setting is important in the novel because it helps with the time period of things. it helps give the details to the reader that might have missed. by giving a setting at a location where the reader can go and look at them selves help with the book be know as a coming of age book. It gives a certain location and it helps give a feel of the things people were able to do. The location also helps the reader look and see all the things that Holden could have gotten into. I don't think the Catcher in the Rye could have taken place in a different city because New York is such a busy place and it symbolizes that Holden can't be controlled. That Holden is a boy that do what he wants and he rely on no one. just like the adults that already live in New York. Holden wants to fit in with the society.
The setting of the novel is essential because it allows Holden to act the way he wants. I think that Holden does not want to care for anyone and wants to be on his own.He does not want to create attachments New York is a well known busy city and allows readers to picture the settings better.
I disagree with Faith, I do not think that Holden wants to fit into society. I think that he wants to be left alone. Only big city's would allow him his independence. If it was a small city then, everyone is in each others business.
The setting of the novel takes place in the 1950s. Even though characters are similiar to us in this present time, the setting is not. There are many object and thing that are in cities and towns that we don't have today. Authors do that to make the fell and the characters more realistic and persuade the readers that we are in the 1950s and we have many thoughts and perspectives about how the setting looks like in the past. The setting is essential because Holden does not know what he wangs in life and he does not know what he need. Holden only lives to see the negaative characteristics of other characters. This story had to take place in New York because today, New York is the biggest city and have the most skyscrapers. With a gigantic city, it puzzles Holden much more and gives the story a little bit of a taste of conflict for Holden.
The setting to the novel of The Catcher in the Rye is essential because most of the subjects that Holden brings up has to revolve around New York. New York is a place where Holden feels free and can act the way he wants to. The novel can take place in another place or time, but if that was to occur then the place needs to be similar to New York so Holden can feel comfortable like he does now. Also, the time period needs to be simmilar too. If neither the place or time are similar, then the novel or some events or subjects that are brought up can not take place.
I agree with Joshua when he was talking about the time change or place changing. He does have a point that if the time or place were to change that they would need to be a time period or place that is similar to the one that is taking place in the novel now. I sort of disagree and agree with Sara. She's right when she said that New York is experiencing change just like Holden is, but Holden can experience change in another state or place. He doesn't necessarily have to in New York because there are other places that are going through change in that time period.
I also kind of agree with Faith when she said that she doesn't think The Catcher in the Rye could take place in another place because it helps the reader understand a little better what Holden is going through and what he experienced in New York.
I agree with Faith when she said "the location helps the reader look and see all the things that Holden could have gotten into." This allows us to see why Holden acts the way he does. The way he feels he can be on his own and wants to, which is similar to many people who live in New York and the reason why they want to move there. I also agree with Jasmin when she said "The setting to the novel of The Catcher in the Rye is essential because most of the subjects that Holden brings up has to revolve around New York." I think that New York being the setting does allow the reader to see that Holden feels he can be free and be on his own as well as do whatever he wants to. It also allows us to see that some of the problems he was going through might have something to do with living in New York.
The Catcher in the Rye setting could not change. The way he talks about the things he could do and the way he describes things makes it seem impossible. If you change the setting you might have to change the era and the activities he does.
I agree with Jasmin about the fact that everything that Holden says revolves around New York. If you change the setting than you will most likely have to change majority of the story, maybe all of it.
I also agree with Sara about that the city is changing just like Holden. The city is somewhat a symbol of Holden. Like the changes he is going through and if you change the setting Holden will be a different person.
The setting is very essential to the novel because it gives a feel of the environment that the reader and Holden experiences. The setting also tells about how the people live in those places. The Catcher in the Rye could have taken in other places such as a suburban areas of a state. The novel would not change as much if it took place at another time. The reason being is because the difficult problems that Holden faces in the novel such as transferring to multiple schools due to his rough actions towards other students is similar as some kids around this time.
At first my impression was that the setting had little to no affect on what made the book. I thought if Salinger really wanted to, he could base the novel in Chicago. As I thought about it more however, you really can't. The novel takes place in the 50's, and Holden who went to many prep schools, where majority of the best prep schools were on the east coast. New York was the best choice because it was a thriving city and was on the east coast.
I also thought that the book could take place in present time because of all the similarities Holden has in reference to our lives. But again thinking a little further, I realized that there aren't many prep schools left on the east coast. Nowadays they're all on the west coast.
I really think the setting is essential only to the main character. The setting this novel takes place in, and all of the experiences that Holden encounters are a direct influence, causing him to lash out against society. With the knowledge of his surroundings as well as the wealthiness of his background; Holden is able to judge others from the context of himself and the setting of the novel is what allows him to do so. All in all, you may be able to change the setting, place, and time, however it will also change the character of Holden if the same message is to be applied.
I agree with what Faith said because J.D. Salinger gets in depth into how life is in New York. People do miss out on the things about New York. This novel shows the other side of New York that other people don't talk about much.
New York city as a location for the novel is essential because Holden's adventure takes place in the city and he visits certain areas and experiences certain things that can only take place in New York. If it was placed in a different time setting, the feelings Holden expresses or his thoughts and opinions on different topics could change as well, which would result in an entirely different novel as we currently know it.
I agree with Faith and Kevin A's intake about Salinger adding depth to New York by exploring the city more through Holden's perspective so we can see more details about New York and notice things we probably wouldn't have otherwise.
Most prep schools are on the east coast and New York is an exciting city, making the setting essential to the novel. The 1950s era can't be changed, but the city New York can. New York only adds a sense of excitement to the book. But that excitement can be found in other cities. Those back in the fifties had less to worry about than now today. They got away with things that we can't in the present.
I find it interesting how Sara said, "This is because the reader can see that the city is somewhat like Holden. During this time period, New York is going through changes just like Holden is. He is also learning new things and going through different experiences in a similar way the city is". I didn't think of this point of view, but now it makes me think more of a hidden relation between New York and Holden.
I disagree with Faith on the fact of "he tries to fit in with society". I feel that Holden is running away from society and doing his own thing. He doesn't want to be like everyone else, he doesn't want to be 'phony'.
I also disagree with Faith. I think that he doesn’t want to fit in with society. That he is trying to run away from it. That’s Holden’s character, he runs away from things he doesn’t want to be a part of. He thinks that everyone is phony and everyone is apart of society. So by staying out of society Holden thinks he is not phony.
The setting is very essential to the novel. Holden is constantly traveling to different places. He stays at different hotels and goes to clubs. I think that this story could take place in a different place but it wouldn’t be the same. New York fits this story with all the reoccurring events and all the people that Holden talk about. If this story took place somewhere else, the city would have to be very big and busy to fit Holden’s needs. No I dont think that this story could take place in another time. If this book took place now, Holden could not do the things he is used to doing such as checking into a hotel, or trying to buy alcohol. There would be more rules that would keep him from doing his daily routines.
The setting of the book i think very essential to the novel.
The reason why the setting is very essential is because the things Holden describes make the book. When he talks about people or when he smokes or drinks or just all the things he does makes the book very essential.
I agree with Kevin A. and Faith also because the author of the book did put in depth what he needed for Holden so it would make Holden a not so crazy character
The setting plays a key role to the novel because it allows the reader to justify Holden`s actions. If the novel was to have a different setting I think it wouldnt be the same. New York is the perfect location for the story because it reminds me of Holden. Holden is a character that is changing non stop, from respect to Jane and then no respect to adults. I think if the time period was to change it would not matter because it is 2009 and teenagers relate to it so whether its set in the 50s or 90s the reader will find a way to relate to it.
I agree with Amanda, that if the setting was different Holden`s character would change. Setting does play a role with certain actions that a person commits.
I disagree with Faith, about Holden wanting to fit into society. I believe Holden wants nothing to deal with society. Holden wants to fit in with people who he considers not fake, in this case it would be no one.
i also agree with Amanda. that if the setting was different, then Holden would change. IF Holden goes to a different place, there are different rules and in some places he would not be able to do some of the things that allow him to feel like an adult.
I agree with Christine and Alexis because Holden acts as if he don't care about anyone. Holden is a character that is changing non stop. He will change with every different thing that may come his way. Even though Holden is a "yellow man", he is also living in New York where there is so much chaos that he has to change. With Holden living in New York, people don't care about the things someone might do, and it will allow Holden to fit in with his snotty ways of being a brat who only care about himself. Holden might care about his brothers and sisters, but he will always put himself first by acting like an adult.
The setting is essential to the novel. Holden explains to us what he does in the city. New York is a busy, fast paced city that gives the story line more energy. If Holden was in the country, for example, it probably would be a bit more dull.
Jessica said.. This novel is essential in many ways. I would have to agree with Mrs. Hinshaw when she says that the novel couldn't be replacee with another time period. The period 1950's fits best with this nnovel becuase like Mrs. Hoinshaw said Holden wouldn't be able to do all the things he did. Especially they way he acted in school. Also how he got punished by the teachers that wouldn't have happen in this time period. New York is the perfect place where this story can take place at. Because when you hear New York you think of excitement, movement, and business. And that is what mostly happens in this certain part in the novel.
Catcher in the Rye takes place in the 1950s. The date and location is essential to the novel. Holden does things in the Big Apple that he wouldn't be able to do in a modern day like today. Holden was able to buy liquor, go into clubs, and check into Hotels. Another essential is that Holden is from the east coast. The biggest city in the East Coast is New York City. Holden was like a rich east coast kid that goes to a boarding school. the book would of not made sense if it took place now. He wouldn't of been able to do the things he does.
Agreeing with Nikky New York is a busy city and that gives the story line more energy. If it were somewhere else like the middle of no where it would be dull.
I do and do not agree with Faith. I think Holden wants to fit in. That's why he's going to clubs and trying to talk to girls. At the same time i think Holden is running away from his problems.
